Greek language and Cypriot Culture
With the conduct of courses of the “Cypriot culture and the Greek language” for Third Country Nationals (TCNs), the integration programs organized by the Municipality of Limassol are running successfully.
The courses are part of the activities of the project “Limassol – a city, the whole world”.
The training courses were a valuable asset in supporting the smooth integration of migrants into the local community. The lessons help by providing basic knowledge of the Greek language and in the understanding of the culture of Cyprus and the customs of the island. In addition, the courses aimed to enhance the active participation of TCNs in the local community and the acceptance of diversity.
The pandemic and the lockdown did not stand in the way of the implementation of the integration program. Classes were held online every Sunday through the ZOOM platform and lasted 12 weeks: from November 15 to February 7.
The participants were refugees and migrants. They had the opportunity to learn basic Greek phrases and words and to attend classes on the history of Cyprus. They learned about the historical course of Cyprus, the various conquerors and civilizations that passed over the centuries, as well as the customs and traditions of the island.
The participants of TCNs expressed their satisfaction and willingness to continue in a new course that will be released soon.
The project “Limassol – One city, the whole world” has been implemented since 2013, offering services to support the process of integration of TCNs in the local community of Limassol. The new implementation period of the program lasts 18 months – from September 2020 to February 2022 – with a budget of € 200,000.
The program is co-financed by the Asylum, Migration and Integration Fund and the Republic of Cyprus.
